Illustration pricing has two independent halves: the drawing and the license. The fee for making the art reflects complexity, size and the number of concept rounds. The license reflects how the client will use it, and a spot illustration in a newsletter and the same drawing on national packaging are not the same sale. This template lists artwork by type — full page, half page, spot, cover, character sheet — with the sketch rounds included, and puts usage on its own row stating media, territory and term. Exclusivity is priced separately from usage, because a client asking you not to sell it elsewhere is buying something extra. Revisions beyond the included rounds bill hourly. A cancellation clause matters: work stopped after sketch approval should pay a stated percentage. Originals, working files and source layers stay yours unless explicitly sold. Editorial clients often pay on publication rather than on receipt, so ask for net 30 from acceptance and put it in writing.

Terms this template starts with
Payment is due within 30 days of invoice date or on acceptance of the artwork, whichever is earlier. Two concept sketch rounds are included; further directions and revisions are billed hourly. Copyright in the artwork is retained by the illustrator. The client receives the usage license stated above on payment in full, limited to the media, territory and term shown; exclusivity, if granted, is priced separately and expires with the term. Projects cancelled after sketch approval are billed at 50%, and in full once final artwork is delivered. Original files, layers and preliminary sketches remain the property of the illustrator.

Illustrator invoicing questions
- How do I price an illustration?
- Two components: the creation fee, driven by complexity, size and the number of concept rounds, and the license, driven by how the client will use it. The same drawing is worth very different amounts to a newsletter and a national packaging run. Quoting one blended number leaves the second component effectively unpaid.
- What should the license cover?
- Media, territory and term, stated plainly — for example, editorial use in one print issue and its digital edition, worldwide, in perpetuity, versus advertising use in North America for one year. Exclusivity is a separate charge from usage. Anything not granted is retained, and it is worth saying so on the invoice.
- Do I charge for concept sketches?
- Include a defined number of sketches in the fee — two or three is normal — and bill additional directions separately. If a project is cancelled after sketches, a fee of roughly a quarter to a half of the total is standard, since the conceptual work is the part that cannot be reused for anyone else.
- When do editorial clients pay?
- Many publications pay thirty days after acceptance, and some still pay on publication, which can be months away. Ask for payment on acceptance in writing, invoice the day the work is accepted rather than the day it runs, and treat a late fee clause as ordinary practice rather than an aggressive move.
