Grooming is priced per dog rather than per hour, and the number depends on size, coat type and how the dog behaved on the table. Build the invoice around a base groom for the weight or breed band, then itemize the add-ons underneath — de-shedding, nail grinding, teeth brushing, flea treatment — so the owner can see exactly what they are paying for and can drop an item next visit instead of dropping you. Matting deserves its own line and its own conversation. Dematting is billed by time on top of the base groom, and the invoice should reflect a price the owner was told before the clippers came out, because that is the charge owners contest most often. Mobile groomers add a call-out fee covering the van, the drive and the water. Payment is due when your dog is collected. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, and no-shows, may be charged at 50% of the booked groom. Severely matted coats are shaved rather than brushed out where brushing would be painful, and the groomer’s welfare judgment is final. - How should I price grooming — by breed, by weight or by time?
- Publish a base price by weight or breed band because owners want a number before they book, then adjust with itemized add-ons for coat condition and extras. Pure hourly pricing punishes you for being fast and unsettles customers. Keep a stated hourly rate in reserve specifically for dematting and difficult handling.
- Can I charge extra for a badly matted coat?
- Yes, and you should, because dematting is slow, hard on the dog and hard on your blades. Quote it before starting, bill it in fifteen-minute increments as its own line, and record on the invoice whether the coat was shaved for welfare reasons. Owners accept a surcharge they were warned about far more readily than one discovered at pickup.
- What does a mobile groomer add to the invoice?
- A call-out or travel fee covering fuel, water, generator time and the drive between appointments, usually banded by distance. Show it separately from the groom itself so the pricing stays comparable with a salon and so you can waive it for a multi-dog household or a regular client without discounting the grooming work.
- Should I invoice recurring grooming clients in advance?
- Standing appointments on a six to eight week cycle work well as a recurring invoice issued a few days before each visit, which reduces no-shows and smooths your cash flow. Some groomers sell a prepaid year of grooms at a small discount instead; if you do, put the number of visits included and their expiry on the document.
