Carpentry invoices depend on which side of the job you are on. Finish and trim work is usually hourly or per linear foot — crown, base, casing, wainscot — while custom cabinetry, built-ins and furniture are priced per project with a deposit taken before material is bought. This template supports both and keeps shop time separate from install time, which is fair to the client and honest about where the hours actually went. Material rows list species and grade, because the gap between poplar and white oak is the whole conversation. If you sub for builders and general contractors, the invoice carries a job or lot reference and a purchase order number so it survives their accounts payable process; those clients pay on terms, not on receipt. Framing and deck work can price per square foot or per linear foot of railing. Deposits and progress payments show as applied amounts, so the balance due is never in question.

Terms this template starts with
Payment is due within 15 days of invoice date. A 50% deposit is required before materials are ordered on custom work and is credited against the total shown. Shop time and on-site installation are billed separately. Workmanship is warranted for 12 months; the warranty excludes seasonal wood movement, moisture damage, and finishes applied by others. Site delays that idle scheduled crew time are billed at the hourly rate above.

Carpenter invoicing questions
- How do I price custom cabinetry?
- Most shops start from linear or square footage of finished cabinetry, adjust for species, door style and hardware, then add finishing and installation separately. Quoting a single project price is cleaner for the client, but build the number from those components so any change in scope has an obvious price rather than a guess.
- Should I take a deposit?
- For custom work, yes. Material for a built-in or a furniture piece is bought specifically for that client and has little resale value if the job is cancelled. A deposit covering materials plus some shop time is standard practice. Some states cap residential contractor deposits, so check before you set a policy.
- Do I bill shop time and install time differently?
- Many carpenters do, and it is the more honest approach. Shop fabrication happens at your rate on your equipment; on-site installation carries travel, site conditions and coordination with other trades. Separating them also makes it obvious why a delayed site that idles your crew is a legitimate additional charge.
- How do I invoice a general contractor?
- Include their job name or lot number and any purchase order number, match your line items to the subcontract scope, and expect terms rather than payment on receipt — net 30 is common and payment may be tied to the builder's own draw. Track your state's lien deadlines separately from the invoice due date.
