Electrical invoices carry weight other trades do not: your license number, the permit, and the inspection sign-off are part of the deliverable, not paperwork around it. This template puts your license and jurisdiction on the document by default, so the customer — and their insurer, and the next buyer of the house — can verify who did the work. Service electricians can bill straight hourly with a trip charge; on new construction and tenant improvement you can switch to a day rate per electrician with apprentice hours on a lower line. Materials belong on their own rows, because panels, breakers and copper move in price fast enough that customers ask, and an itemized wire cost is easier to defend than a lump sum. Permit and inspection fees pass through at cost on a separate line so nobody thinks you marked up the city. Attach the panel schedule or load calculation when the job warrants it.

The template opens with these lines already filled in. Change any of them — they are a starting point, not a price list.

Terms this template starts with

Payment is due on receipt. All work is performed to the current adopted National Electrical Code and the local amendments in force at the time of installation. Workmanship is warranted for 12 months; devices, breakers and fixtures carry only their manufacturer warranty. Circuits, loads or equipment added by others after final inspection are excluded. Concealed conditions in existing wiring will be quoted as a change order before any additional work begins.

Electrician invoicing questions

Should my license number appear on the invoice?
Yes. In most states with a licensing board it is required on contracts and advertising, and invoices are commonly included. Rules vary, so confirm with your state board. Beyond compliance it is a sales asset: the license number is the fastest proof that the work was done by someone the customer can verify independently.
How do I bill permit and inspection fees?
Pass them through at cost on their own line, labelled with the issuing jurisdiction and the permit number. Adding a modest handling charge for the time spent pulling the permit and meeting the inspector is reasonable, but bill it as a separate administrative line rather than inflating the government fee itself.
Hourly or flat rate for service calls?
Residential service is trending toward flat-rate pricing from a published task book, because it removes the customer fear of an open-ended clock. Hourly still fits troubleshooting and commercial work where scope genuinely cannot be predicted. Many electricians use both — flat rate for known tasks, hourly for diagnostics — clearly separated on the invoice.
What is a fair day rate for larger jobs?
Day rates on commercial and new-construction work are usually built from your loaded hourly cost across eight to ten hours plus overhead and margin, quoted per electrician with apprentices on a lower line. Publish the assumed day length on the invoice so hours beyond it are billable without a renegotiation.
