Handyman work is a dozen small jobs that need to read as one fair bill. Most operators charge a minimum — commonly one or two hours — then bill in quarter- or half-hour increments after that, plus a trip charge and materials at cost or a modest markup. This template makes the minimum visible instead of hiding it, which heads off the "you were only here forty minutes" conversation. Each task gets its own row: mount the TV, rehang the gate, replace three outlets. Customers who see the list rarely argue about the total. Materials bought on the customer's behalf go on separate lines with receipts attachable, so there is no question about what was marked up. If you quote flat rates for common jobs, swap the hourly rows for job rows and leave everything else in place. Multi-day punch lists can be invoiced per visit or consolidated at the end of the week.

Payment is due on receipt. A 2-hour minimum applies to every visit; time beyond the minimum is billed in 30-minute increments. Materials purchased on your behalf are billed at cost plus a 15% procurement charge, with receipts available on request. Repairs are warranted for 90 days against defects in workmanship. Work involving licensed trades is referred out where required by state or municipal rules.

Handyman invoicing questions
- Should I charge a minimum?
- Most handymen do, typically one or two hours, because a thirty-minute job still costs a round trip and a parking space. State the minimum when you book the visit and show it as the first line on the invoice. Customers accept it readily when they hear it in advance and resent it when they discover it later.
- Do I need a contractor license?
- It depends on your state and the dollar value of the job. Many states exempt small repairs below a threshold but require licensing above it, and some cities add their own registration. Check your state contractor board before advertising trades like electrical or plumbing work, which are frequently carved out regardless of job size.
- How should I handle materials I buy for the customer?
- Bill them on separate lines and keep receipts attachable to the invoice. Charging cost plus a modest markup or a stated procurement fee is normal and covers your time and the money you fronted. What causes friction is an unexplained materials lump sum, not the markup itself.
- Hourly or per-task pricing?
- Hourly is simpler for mixed punch lists where the scope is unknown until you arrive. Per-task flat pricing wins on common jobs — TV mounts, faucet swaps, door adjustments — because the customer can say yes to a number without watching a clock. Many handymen use flat rates for their top ten jobs and hourly for everything else.
