Roofing is sold by the square — one hundred square feet — and a credible invoice shows the count. This template itemizes squares installed, layers torn off, and the underlayment, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, ridge vent, pipe boots and flashing that go under and around the shingles, because those components are exactly what separates a real bid from a lowball one. Disposal and dumpster costs get their own line rather than being absorbed. Decking replacement bills per sheet at a unit price agreed up front, since nobody knows what is under the old roof until it is off. On insurance-funded work there is room for the claim number, the adjuster's scope reference and the deductible the homeowner still owes. Warranty language matters more here than in any other trade: state the manufacturer's material warranty separately from your workmanship warranty, with the years and what voids each. Final payment is normally due on completion and final walkthrough.

Terms this template starts with
Final payment is due on completion and final walkthrough. Workmanship is warranted for 10 years from completion against leaks caused by installation; the shingle manufacturer's material warranty is separate, runs for its own stated term, and requires registration where applicable. Excluded from all warranties: storm and hail damage, foot traffic, structural movement, ventilation deficiencies not corrected at our recommendation, and work performed on the roof by others. Decking replacement beyond the allowance in the contract is billed per sheet as documented.

Roofer invoicing questions
- What is a roofing square?
- One hundred square feet of roof area. Material and labor on shingle roofs price by the square, and the count comes from the roof's actual surface including pitch and waste, not the building footprint. Putting the square count on the invoice lets a homeowner compare bids on the same basis instead of guessing.
- How is decking replacement billed?
- Nobody knows the deck condition until the old roof is off, so quote a per-sheet unit price in the contract and bill the actual count on the invoice. Photograph rotted areas before covering them. An agreed unit price with documented quantities is the difference between an accepted extra and a long argument.
- How do I invoice an insurance claim job?
- Match your line items to the adjuster's scope so the two reconcile item by item, reference the claim number, and show the deductible as the homeowner's remaining responsibility. Do not offer to absorb or rebate the deductible — it is prohibited in many states and can jeopardize the claim for the homeowner as well.
- What warranty should I state?
- Two, kept separate: the manufacturer's material warranty with its term and any registration requirement, and your own workmanship warranty with its length and exclusions. Storm damage, foot traffic and third-party work are common carve-outs. Being specific protects you far better than an unqualified promise a customer will read generously.
